Students at all grade levels are encouraged to join the annual summer reading program coordinated by the district’s Reading Department and school librarians with assistance from the West Haven Public Library. The initiative also promotes participation in the Connecticut Reads 2016 Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge and a theme of “On your mark, get set...read!"

Schools provided students with lists of recommended books based on grade level (Bailey book suggestions are listed here and here) to read over the summer.

It’s important for students to continue to read over the summer to maintain and build upon literacy skills developed during the school year.

Schools have also outlined ways for parents to help their children with summer reading:

  • Get to know the librarians in your community and what the library has to offer. Librarians will help your child locate books that match their interests. While you are there, check out a book for yourself!

  • Don't leave home without it--Have your child bring along a book or magazine any time they have to wait, such as at a doctor's office. Always try to fit in reading!

  • Take control of the television. It's difficult for reading to compete with TV and video games. Encourage reading as a free-time activity.
