Bailey’s international dinner celebrates diversity

WEST HAVEN, Nov. 15, 2013 — Foods from a variety of cultures tempted taste buds at last week’s “Taste of Bailey” international dinner, as families mingled and music played in the background.

The event was held at Bailey Middle School and organized by the school governance council as a way to celebrate the school system’s diversity and give families a fun night out. Those who participated contributed dishes representing Ireland, Italy, Ecuador and more. About 25 families were expected to attend.

The governance council had previously held a similar event about two years ago, according to teacher Sheila Krajcir, who is on the council.

“We thought, ‘Let’s do something cultural to enjoy each family’s food and celebrate their heritage,’” she said. “There’s no pressure. It’s just a potluck dinner.”

There were pastas and shepherd’s pies, stuffed breads, cookies and even a seafood dish.

Parent Angelo Moscato has an eighth-grade son at the school and said he and his family came because they try to stay active in the school system. Jocelyn Campoverde, who already passed through Bailey but now has a sister who attends the school, said her whole family came to the dinner and brought ceviche, a dish of shrimp, onions, tomatoes, rice and cilantro.

“We came to share a little bit of where we come from,” she said.

Lisa and Ralph Eberle, who came with their daughter, said they were glad to come and give back to the school.

“It’s nice to learn about other cultures,” Lisa Eberle said.
