Bailey students' art chosen for mayor's Christmas card

Dec. 19, 2013 —Mayor Edward O’Brien presented official citations Thursday afternoon at City Hall to three Bailey Middle School eighth-graders whose artwork had been chosen for the cover of the mayor’s Christmas card.

Chris Skeens, Jocelyn Artman and Taylor Mahoney were honored before family members, Superintendent of Schools Neil C. Cavallaro and Bailey art teacher Kathy Shea.

The mayor chooses students’ art designs each year. The framed cards and artwork will be on display in City Hall during the holidays.

Chris’ hand-drawn piece featured a Santa Claus holding his “naughty and nice” book in the air. When asked where he got the idea for the drawing, he said, “I just thought of the Statue of Liberty.”

Jocelyn said she was inspired to use acrylic paint to create a Christmas tree and beach scene because she lives at the shore.

Taylor explained that she enjoys creating her own characters on the computer and by hand, so she created a Christmas character holding candy canes and wearing a Santa hat and scarf by using Microsoft Paint.

All three students said they enjoy making art in their spare time.
