The Bailey Middle School English Language Arts program hopes to see lots of bookworms emerge this year as it introduces independent reading periods and a boatload of extra books to classrooms. Colette Bennett, the district's new coordinator for English and language arts, delivered boxes and bags of reading material to Bailey this week after scouring used book sales for the best young adult titles--taking advantage of an inexpensive way to easily get a wide variety of books into kids' hands and determine which genres grab their attention. The books were distributed among Bailey classrooms and will be available to students during "sustained silent reading" or "independent reading" time of English Language Arts periods. Strong reading skills are essential to academic success, since all subjects--even math--have reading elements. Bailey hopes to expand classroom libraries so every student can find a book he or she is interested in and enjoy independent reading in school and at home.
